Your internet traffic travels through that tunnel, so people on the same network can’t easily see what you’re doing, and websites see the VPN server’s address instead of yours.

How it works

Normally, when you go online, your device sends data through your local network, such as home Wi-Fi or a café hotspot, then through your internet provider, and on to the website you’re visiting. Several parties along the way can see where that data is going.

When you switch on a VPN, an app on your device first connects to a VPN server. From then on, your data is encrypted, which means scrambled so that only your device and the VPN server can read it. The scrambled data travels to the VPN server, which unscrambles it and sends it on to the website. Replies come back the same way in reverse. The encryption involved is the same general kind of technology that protects online banking and shopping: without the right digital keys, the data looks like random noise and can’t be read.

This has two main effects. First, anyone watching the local network or your internet provider can see that you’re connected to a VPN, but not the details of what you’re sending through it. Second, the websites you visit see the VPN server’s internet address rather than your own, so they usually treat you as being wherever that server is.

Businesses use VPNs too. A company VPN connects an employee’s device to the company’s private network, so they can use internal systems safely from home or while travelling. This was the original purpose of VPNs.

An everyday example

Imagine you’re working in a café and connecting to its public Wi-Fi. You don’t know who else is on that network or how well it’s protected. With a VPN switched on, your data leaves your laptop already encrypted, so even if someone on the same Wi-Fi could capture it, they would only see scrambled data.

Another common example is a work laptop. When you connect to the company VPN, you can open shared drives and internal tools as if you were sitting in the office.

Why it matters

VPNs add a layer of privacy and security, especially on networks you don’t control. They help stop others on the same network from snooping on your traffic, and they hide your real internet address from the sites you visit.

They are not magic, though. A VPN doesn’t stop you from downloading something harmful or typing your password into a fake website. Sites can still recognise you when you sign in to your account or through cookies. And all your traffic now passes through the VPN provider, so you are trusting them instead of your local network. Choosing a reputable provider, and reading what it says about the data it keeps, matters.

Rules about VPNs differ between countries, and some services’ terms limit how they can be used, so it’s worth checking what applies to you.

Common questions

Does a VPN make me anonymous?

Not completely. It hides your traffic from the local network and your real address from websites, but the VPN provider can see your connection, and signing in to accounts still identifies you.

Will a VPN slow down my internet?

It can, a little, because your data takes an extra trip through the VPN server and is encrypted along the way. A nearby, good-quality server usually keeps the difference small.

Do I need a VPN at home?

Many people don’t. Most websites already encrypt your connection (the padlock in your browser). A VPN is most useful on public Wi-Fi, for reaching a work network, or if you want to hide your address from the sites you visit.

Related terms

Encryption

IP address

Wi-Fi

HTTPS

Proxy server

A VPN (virtual private network) creates a protected, encrypted connection between your device and a server run by the VPN service.
